Data sources and disclaimer
Safety Portal brings public motor carrier records together in one readable profile. Here is where the data comes from and what it can and can't tell you.
Where the data comes from
Every profile is compiled from public records published by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), an agency of the U.S. Department of Transportation:
Motor Carrier Census (MCMIS)
USDOT registration, legal and DBA names, addresses, phone numbers, officers, operation type, cargo carried, and the vehicle and driver counts reported on the MCS-150.
Licensing & Insurance (L&I)
MC/docket numbers, common, contract and broker authority status, pending applications, revocations, and BIPD, cargo and bond filings with their history.
Safety Measurement System (SMS)
BASIC measures, percentiles (where FMCSA makes them public), alerts and safety ratings from compliance reviews.
Inspection and crash files
Roadside inspection results, violations, out-of-service orders and reportable crashes over the last 24 months, plus national out-of-service averages.
Records are shown as filed. We don't edit or reinterpret what carriers reported.
How often it's updated
This version of Safety Portal uses a static data snapshot, last updated Oct 8, 2026. Each profile shows its own “last updated” date. Scheduled refreshes from FMCSA are planned.
Limitations
- Insurance “on file” means a filing was recorded with FMCSA. It does not confirm a policy is active today. Always request a current certificate of insurance.
- The Compliance Snapshot is worked out automatically from the records. A flag is a reason to verify, not proof of wrongdoing.
- Connected companies are matched on shared phone numbers, addresses or officers. Matches can be coincidental.
- Crash records do not indicate fault, and FMCSA withholds some SMS percentiles from public view.
- MCS-150 fleet and mileage figures are self-reported by the carrier.
Sample data
Profiles marked Sample data describe fictional carriers created to demonstrate the product. Their names, USDOT and MC numbers, contacts and records are invented and do not describe any real business.
